We were kickin around lookin back at the decade, and forward to the next one and thinkin……  ya I know, not usual for us :) Anyways, we were lookin at the convergence of Phones/netbooks/mp3 players and so on and came up with the device name for the next decade. People will no longer talk about PMP’s, Phones, Mp3’s, they will talk about PCD’s.

Defined today by us: Personal Computing Device

Part phone, music player, netbook, tablet, all in one that everyone will carry by the end of the decade. Plug it into the TV, a docking station, carry it in your pocket, 1 device, data in the cloud…..  the way of the future :)

cheers and Happy New Years from

We're OK :)

Just to let everyone know we are ok, the floodwaters did not reach us. And thank you for all the phone calls and yes I have been neglecting this site, I promise to start updating more often :)

ps. I've added a donation button on the right because my ride (3 wheel scooter) has died and I need a few bucks to get mobile again :) Its a project thats been pending for a while because of course we don't want a standard scooter, we want a computerized rolling desktop :) My big expense is a couple of batteries as the rest I've collected over the last couple years. I'll update on this project soon :)

Spider and Jeanne Robinson need help

If you are like me, reading has been, is, and will continue to be one of the things that provides immense satisfaction. As far back as I an remember, I have been enjoying the works of Spider and Jeanne Robinson. They have prompted smiles, laughter and yes, sometimes tears through the years with their work, but they are in need of a little bit of help at the moment.

This from

Beloved Hugo-award-winning writer, dancer and choreographer Jeanne Robinson (wife of Spider Robinson) has cancer, and it has taken a turn for the worse. Spider Robinson describes their financial situation as dire ("running on fumes") and so he's asking for cash to help them get through this. There's lots of ways to give, from bidding in a charity auction to attending a benefit concert to buying Spider's books. I've just sent them what I could spare -- Jeanne and Spider have given me so much pleasure and wisdom over the years, it was an honor. I hope that some of you who've been touched by them will do the same.

Post here:  boingboing

If you can, please find it in your hearts to do what you can.

PS. I’ll try and get an update about the garden and us soon, August was a bit difficult for me but its fall now, so new challenges :)

Summer Festival

Duncan’s Summer Festival starts this week, and we have a great seat right downtown to watch all the fun and listen to the music as the square “Duncan Square Webcam” is just down the block.  Here’s a few updated pics.

We’ll probably take over a bunch of the parking lot later in the week for the weekend festival so I’ll post updates later.

Early June in the Garden

Just a few pics ….

Water Barrels

Well, we’ve been setting up a couple of rain barrels that our lovely landlord has provided, and have managed to do it using repurposed stuff from around the house.

The roof drains intdcp_5584o 2 gutters, each half the length of the roof. The west end was easy, the barrel sits in the garden close below the end of the gutter and we repurposed an old dryer hose to get the water to the barrel. In the winter we undo the hose and it drains into the garden.

The east side is a little more difficult. The gutter ends above the corner of the deck, and we really didn’t want to lose the space on DCP_0047 the deck in order to accommodate the rain barrel. We ended up putting the rain barrel on the far side of the deck, and then had to figure out how to get the water over there :) We used some wood we had donated last year, and built a flume (similar to old time log flumes, which now you only see as log rides in amusement parks) that turns DCP_0036a corner, passes over our heads on the deck and drops into the barrels. When it rains, its beautiful as it now sounds like we have our own creek out by the deck.

Our plan now is to rig a pump and some kind of holding tank so we can get the creek soundDCP_0088 all the time :)

ps. we have video but we’re still in the learning stage for the editing, so its on its way :)

There are tens of thousands of people on Facebook talking about how they will be celebrating Earth Hour and people across the country are Twittering about the big event.

We still need your help! WWF is asking people to register your participation at Even if you are already planning to turn out your lights for Earth Hour, please lend your name to the cause so WWF can track and report on participation here in Canada, and around the world, to show world leaders that Canadians want action on climate change, and are ready to be part of the solution. Make your voice heard today - sign up at!

And remember... by signing up you also have a chance to win a trip for two to visit the polar bears in Churchill, Manitoba! If you have already signed up, you can still be entered in the contest. Who wants to loan me a few bucks? I have an opportunity to 46bpurchase 1 slightly used Stealth Boat along with a submersible mining barge that acts as its dock for a measly $0. All we need is a few bucks to go get it, a place to tie it up, and an idea to make a few bucks using it :)

Mini Greenhouse

So this last week, we designed and built a small greenhouse to try and get a few extra months of growing in for our herbs and veggies.PIC_0025 It is designed to sit in the only spot that gets afternoon sun most of the year and the plastic and frame should just lift off when the weather gets better leaving a stepped plant stand behind for the summer months.

We tried a couple different types of plastic, but ended up biting the bullet and using 6mil water vapor barrier plastic in the end. Our greenhouse costs were just a smidge over $100 with the majority of that being the plastic :)

Here’s some photos of the build and end results (the final results photos were shot using TS’s New JVC Everio HD video camera (thanks Mom2)…..  WOW what a system :) ).

Taking shape..

First plastic on, no doors yet..

My buddies outside my kitchen window, they’re always hammin it up..
